Taynish Art Trail 2017

Taynish Art Trail 2017

Artmap Argyll artists – Kirsty Brady;   Melanie Chimelewska;   Margaret Ker;  Kate MacDonald & Alexander  Hamilton;  Louise Oppenheimer;   Jane Smith;  Jane Walker – were joined by invited Glasgow  artists Tom Allan & Pauline Muir to create art installations at the SNH Taynish Nature Reserve at Tayvallich, Argyll.     This is the 40th anniversary year for this well-loved National Nature Reserve.   Coincidentally, Artmap celebrates 10 years since inception.

This is a lively collection of art work with a diverse use of materials & media, & showcases a full repertoire of many skills & talents.

The craft of the weaver, printmaker, painter, sculptor, ceramicist, textile & glass artist mix with conceptual, imaginative works set within a spatial, historical & expressive context.  Many themes & objectives are applied. The dynamics of fire, science, water, energy, movement, texture & technology with sound are considered.  Some of the artwork is animated by references to poetry & folklore of the area.  At the site of the old mill, Jane Smith exhibits a collection of reproduction prints which illustrates the work she made during her time as Taynish Artist in Residence 2016-2017.

Most of the work is site specific, some of it is interactive.  Lay in a hammock – listen to a thrush tapping ‘the anvil’ – stand in a doorway – leave your thoughts in a notebook – walk the labyrinth.

The art trail is in place from 24th May until 30th September 2017. It is cost free & open to public with all ability & easy walking access to & from the mill. There is information by way of a map at the start of the walk adjacent to the car park.

The art work is for sale, open to commission or priced on application to the artist.

Colouring for All Ages – Natures Paradise Vol 1

Argyll – Nature’s Paradise has been an inspiration to artists since ancient times with some of the most prolific ancient rock art in Europe found in and around Kilmartin Glen.  To celebrate this legacy and the rich creative talent living and working in Argyll & the Isles today, we have commissioned 8 illustrations from 8 different Artists.

The artists illustrated locations from across Nature’s Paradise that have provided a deep source of inspiration and which are accessible to all.

So as you travel Argyll and colour in the illustrations why not visit our special places for a little extra inspiration. These are wonderful to explore and can readily be combined with studio visits as a great day out.  You can wander through the gardens and enjoy our unique blend of peace and tranquillity. Or for the more energetic there are woodland paths and cycle trails leading to spectacular view points and beaches with endless opportunities to spot wildlife and explore castles, duns and the ruins of abandoned townships.

Art at the Mill

Artmap Argyll – Art at the Mill

Taynish Collage1

This summer, Taynish NNR will host a free, outdoor, art trail along the all ability Mill path, all the way down to the shore.   Nine Artmap Argyll artists have made artworks especially for this event that is open from Tuesday 26 May. SNH Art at the Mill is No 34 on the Red Dot Studio trail during the annual Open Studios weekend 28th to 31st August 2015

This is a special opportunity to experience the extraordinary natural habitats, sea shore and landscape at NNR Taynish and see how 10 artists have interpreted stone, ceramic, glass, concrete, willow, textiles, mirror and print to sit in their chosen settings. You can have a Close Encounter with Jane Walker’s stag, see Sian MacQueen’s concrete prayer flags melt into birch trees; Louise Oppenheimer’s Passing Flow wool weavings are cleverly installed into the Mill building itself beside reproduction print images of Jane Smith’s Frogs & Toads. There is plenty to discover around water with Lucinda Hopkinson’s ephemeral Frozen in Time and Dragonfly; Lesley Burr’s series of 3 colourful mosaic Rainbow fish are heading upstream; Kirsty Brady’s stained glass birds suspended over the pond and then Margaret Ker’s spider web sparkles in the ancient oak and Mill Stone bench with a fantastic view and William Blake poem to ponder; Melanie Chmielewska’s dreamy Dog Angel is a quiet companion as you look out over Lock Sween and finally the well known sculptor Rob Mulholland shows two mirror male and female figures that reflect back changing aspects of the landscape.
